Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma in a Patient with Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis and Markedly Elevated Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein

چکیده
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is considered the leading cause of primary liver malignancy, however, a tumor arising from biliary tree should be always kept among differential diagnosis. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) group malignancies that represents 10-20% all masses being perihilar cholangiocarcinoma most common and intrahepatic less subtype. Important biomarkers such as serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) are commonly measured. An elevated AFP > 400 ng/mL very specific for HCC. On contrary, levels rarely exceed 20 in patients with cholangiocarcinoma. We report case patient markedly who was found to have ICC.

Markedly increased alpha-fetoprotein concentration in serum in alcoholic liver disease: malignant tumor or nonneoplastic changes?
We present a patient with a history of alcohol abuse who was admitted to a hospital in poor condition. His serum concentration of alpha-fetoprotein was markedly increased [initially 1400 kilo-int. unitsfL, after four months 6600 kilo-mt. unita/L (-1700 and 7900 .tg/L, respectively)]. This finding led us to suspect the presence of a liver tumor, which was supported by ultrasonographic examinatio...
متن کاملHBV-associated intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with high serum alpha-fetoprotein: a case report with review of literature
BACKGROUND Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare malignant tumor. The etiology of ICC remains poorly understood. Recently, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been implicated as a potential risk factor for ICC, particularly in HBV-endemic areas. Elevation of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is seen in approximately 20 % of ICC patients. However, serum AFP levels higher than 10,000 ng/m...
متن کاملElevated serum alpha-fetoprotein in a patient with undifferentiated carcinoma of the gall bladder.
An uncommon case of undifferentiated carcinoma of the gall bladder in a 65 year old Chinese man, who presented with an increased serum alpha-fetoprotein concentration, is reported. Histologically, the tumour had a primitive appearance and was composed of a pavement-like array of poorly differentiated columnar/polygonal cells. Alpha-fetoprotein was demonstrated in some of the tumour cells using ...

Background/Aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) refers to the accumulation of hepatic steatosis not due to excess alcohol consumption. It is the most common liver condition in the world. The prevalence of NAFLD is up to 30% in developed countries and nearly 10% in developing nations. The aim of this study is to assess serum alpha-fetoprotein triglyceride, and total cholesterolamong Suda...
متن کاملCholangiocarcinoma Associated with Liver Fluke Infection in an Iranian Patient
Biliary liver flukes are common parasites in some regions of the world where consumption of raw fresh-water fish is a cultural practice. Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis species are the major biliary liver flukes associated with human disease. Some of these parasites are highly associated with cholan...
